2012 Nicaragua

Communities: Granada, Samulali, San Ignacio, El Espavel, & Nagarote

Pablo Antonio Cuadra – B3 partnered with La Esperanza Granada to construct several classrooms that will allow students to finish their final years of high school. Currently, students in this community are only able to complete three of the required five years of high school (standard in Nicaragua). Once these rooms are completed, every student will have the ability to graduate from high school.

The mission of La Esperanza Granada is to end the cycle of poverty through education.

Samulali – B3 worked with the Peace Corps and the Bridges to Prosperity organization to construct a bridge connecting the people of Samulalí with schools and work on the other side of a river. This will better connect family members and enable safe access to schools, medical attention, food, and work.

San Ignacio – B3 partnered with La Esperanza Granada to construct several classrooms and a small “technical” building to provide high school space at a primary school for the rural community. There is no high school nearby – without high school classrooms, after primary school, education pretty much ends for the children of San Ignacio.

El Espavel – B3 partnered with Un Techo Para Mi Pais and the local community to construct 10 prefab homes. Both Un Techo Para Mi Pais and B3 assisted the families to move to more substantial housing as the first step to becoming self-sufficient.

Nagarote – During the mid 1980’s, communities throughout the United States began forming Sister City relationships around the world. In 1986, Norwalk, Connecticut became a Sister City to the town of Nagarote, Nicaragua. B3 worked in Nagarote with NicaPhoto to build a preschool as the first phase of a school that will ultimately include classrooms for both elementary and high school students. NicaPhoto runs an after school program providing students ages 9 and older with a place to study, be part of book groups, learn about photography, computers, martial arts, and the value of an education.
